Do i need different lighting for my herb garden?

herbs to grow in the garden by bill barber

Question by Frodo98: Do i need different lighting for my herb garden? Hello, right now i have a little herb garden growing in my bedroom. i have a pot with basil and parsley that’s still young and hasn’t grown much on my windowsill. Then i have 2 basil plants (Italian and sweet), 1 thyme, 1 chives, and 1 arugala plant on a raised shelf on my brother and I’s desk. They are in pots and i have a incandescent light bulb that gives them there heat and light i have a 60 watt bulb in there. I’m also thinking of adding a parsley plants or cilantro plant too. I just put in another light bulb on the opposite side to put out a little more light is this overkill? Also is flourecent or incandecent better for growth and i tried to plant them outdoors but after hours of preperation and digging and getting rid of all the grass and most of the weeds i ran into a rather large obstruction. It’s like a big big big root or rock or something so yah. Is my light sufficient to keep them happy and healthy because they all like hot full sun or partial shade.

Thanks for the help :D It’s about 3 feet from a window and my mom said that it’s probably getting plenty of light idk though?

Best answer:

Answer by DaveSFVNope you need sunlight. A 60 watt incandescent is not even close to the right amount of light. Remember it is intensity of the light that is important and to do that artificially is expensive. And increasing the duration of light does not work either. Intensity!

Q&A: What is this grey large spider in my pond?

garden edging ideas by elycefeliz

Question by morphicsaiyan: What is this grey large spider in my pond? There are 2 big grey spiders in my pond. They aren’t water striders, cause I know what they look like. They kinda hang out on the edge and go underwater when disturbed. I tried to look it up in my bugbook but didn’t really find anything that looked like it. It is the size of a garden spider so it’s fairly big. It’s grey and got a big butt. Any ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by Lord Chuchundra© Manda-Style©It’s a water spider that makes an air bubble under the water. The grey you see is an air bubble. I learned about these in arachnology and yet the name escapes my mind. They are harmless they do eat water dwelling creatures. And a water stride is a hemipteran.

I went and looked up the family name its Pisauridae and they are diving spiders or nursery web spiders

Since there are no weeds in winter, what is the purpose of applying a garden mulch in the fall?

Question by boringsadlife: Since there are no weeds in winter, what is the purpose of applying a garden mulch in the fall?

Best answer:

Answer by valkyrieMulch is not applied only to control weeds but it is also used to keep the soil moist during periods of dry weather. The roots still need to get water even in the winter and the mulch will help keep the soil from drying out. Also the mulch helps to protect the plants roots from harsh winter temperatures as the soil below the mulch is usually a little warmer than surrounding areas. And finally as the mulch biodegrades it will give your plants nourishment.

Hope this helps.
